Top 3 Causes of Tooth Erosion

Posted on 8/20/2018 by Boeckel
Top 3 Causes of Tooth ErosionTooth erosion is the erosion of your teeth's outermost covering, which is known as the enamel. This is a translucent hard tissue that protects your teeth.

Since it's the teeth's outermost covering, it's the first thing that's affected when your mouth produces acid.

Unfortunately, there's now living cells in this part of your teeth, which is why it can't regenerate itself when it's cracked. Once you damage your teeth's enamel your teeth lose their protection. This is the definition of tooth erosion. There are three main causes of it.

Unhealthy Oral Habits

One of the main causes of tooth erosion has to do with unhealthy oral habits. This includes things like chewing on the end of a pen and not brushing or flossing your teeth on a regular basis.

Acid Production

Another cause of tooth erosion is the production of acid by the bacteria in your mouth. This happens for two main reasons. The first has to do with gastrointestinal problems. Secondly, excessive consumption of soft drinks and food leaves a lot of acid in your mouth as well.

Other Health Issues

Sometimes, people need medication for managing certain diseases. These medications can introduce acids into your mouth or even make your mouth dry (xerostomia). When you don't have enough saliva in your mouth, acid sits on your teeth for a prolonged time.

Managing Tooth Erosion

You can take steps to prevent or stop tooth erosion from happening. For instance, you can eat a healthier diet. However, you need to take steps beyond this as well.

While you can brush and floss your teeth to prevent acid from sitting on them or tooth decay, you also need to visit our office on a regular basis. We can conduct a deeper cleaning than you can at home so contact us today.
