Adults Need to Ask About Dental Sealants, Too

Dental Sealant Lisa Gitelson, DMD OR 97224-3790Often times we have parents who bring in their children to get dental sealants ask us "Are these just for kids?" and the answer to that is, No! Adults can benefit greatly from them as well.

While it's true that children are more prone to cavities, it's largely because they're just learning how to take care of their own oral health. Dental sealants help by reducing the risk of tooth decay. We seal the tooth by applying a thin protective coating to the tooth.

It adheres to the chewing surface of the back teeth and while it's definitely not a substitution for good oral hygiene, it can keep cavities from forming.

Not Just For Kids

Dental sealants are appropriate for mouths of all ages! Whether you're five or fifty, if you come into our office and we notice that you're struggling with cavities or decay in your molars, we'll suggest it. The thin protective layer that we apply to your teeth can reduce your risk of decay by nearly 80%.

We begin by giving your teeth a thorough cleaning, and then we dry them. After they're dry, we will apply an acidic gel onto your teeth which will rough up the tooth's surface so that a stronger bond can form between your teeth and the sealant. It only takes a few seconds to apply the sealant and then we use a special blue light that hardens the sealant instantly.

There are no known side effects and they can even be placed over an existing cavity. Regular checkups with us will allow us to monitor the tooth and make sure that if a sealant is placed over a cavity, that there is no further decay. Give us a call today and chat with our friendly staff about whether or not having sealants applied to your grown-up teeth is right for you!
