Sports Drinks Lisa Gitelson, DMD OR 97224-3790If you're an athlete or play a sport on a regular basis for fun, there are times you will need something other than water to keep going.

Whether it's a hot summer day or you have been playing in the sun all day and need a pick me up, you will most likely need some electrolytes, but there are dangers associated with consuming sports drinks regularly.

Exerting yourself while working out or playing sports means that you will need to drink something to give you more energy during, or after the competition is done. If you're like most physically active people, you probably have a sports drink handy in your bag, but you should be thinking of what's in that drink.

Sports drinks contain a lot of sugar, which, if taken regularly can be a problem for your overall health and your oral health as well. Too much sugar can cause cavities and other dental problems, so you should limit your sports drink intake and try to find other alternatives.

Sodium Citrate

Sodium Citrate is another ingredient in sports drinks, which has been linked to diarrhea, vomiting and nausea. This can cause dehydration and would defeat the purpose of having the drink.

Food Coloring

Food coloring is increasingly becoming something to avoid. It's an additive so that is the first thing that should get your attention. Some studies also suggest a link between food coloring and ADHD and some children's symptoms improve when the food coloring is removed from their diet.

A great alternative to sports drinks is coconut water, which has the same replenishing properties, but with vitamins and minerals that are important to the body. Like anything else, sports drinks can be consumed in moderation, but you need to be aware of what is in those drinks and what the effects on your health are.
