What Happens When You Floss Too Hard?

Posted on 2/10/2018 by Boeckel
Flossing Lisa Gitelson, DMD OR 97224-3790Flossing is required to be done when it comes to the integrity of your teeth and the cleanliness of them.

In order to reduce the plaque and build up that is found in and between the teeth, you want to make sure that you use the right amount of floss in the right areas between the teeth.

When you do this, you will have better overall oral health because you are removing some of the build up that would otherwise cause cavities and decay to happen.

Flossing Too Hard Does Happen

There is such thing as flossing too hard though. You want to be aware of the flossing that you are doing, as well. Not only can you floss too hard, but also too light. Being able to have the right amount of pressure on the tooth and gums is ideal.

Pressing down with the dental floss can cut through the gums and even under the teeth. While this is good to remove plaque, some of the build up might end up going into these areas. This is why it is not going to do much cleaning when you push it further into the gums.

Flossing hard can damage the gum tissue around the teeth and cause discomfort, bleeding and pain. Make sure you are flossing with the right amount of pressure to remove the plaque but not damage the mouth in the process. You also want to pair it with your brushing to make it the most effective.

Speak with us today regarding the flossing you need to do and what can be done about learning how to do so better.
