Flossing is not ever supposed to hurt. If you push too hard, it may be tender for a moment, but pain shouldn't be a part of your daily flossing routine. Noticing pain while flossing is often a sign that you are dealing with a bigger issue.

Instead of ignoring it or trying to get used to it, you need to speak with your dentist about how to fix it. You should not try and suffer through any pain in your mouth.

What Painful Flossing Can Mean

Most of the time, painful flossing means that you are starting to develop gum disease. If you normally keep up with daily flossing, but you start to notice pain coming on out of the blue, you need your dentist to look at your mouth. Gum disease is easily treated when caught right when it starts, and it can often be reversed to where you would not suffer any negative consequences.

If you are having painful flossing in only one part of your mouth, it could be the sign that you have a sore in your mouth, something stuck between your teeth, or early decay right on your gum line. This is also something that needs to be looked at by your dentist.

They want to ensure that you aren't in pain, and that you can do everything you would normally do as part of your oral hygiene routine. By letting them inspect your mouth, you can pick out the problem and get it treated early.

Talk to your dentist as soon as you notice that flossing hurts. The sooner you have your dentist look into the problem, the sooner you can get it fixed. Leaving your mouth in pain is not good, and it could pose larger problems if left untreated instead of addressed right away.
