Tending to a Bleeding Mouth Injury

A man suffering from a bleeding mouth injury.
If your mouth was injured to where you are bleeding, the first thing you need to do is to keep calm. The calmer you are, the less you are likely to bleed, and the better health choices you are likely going to make.

If you lost a tooth, find the tooth and pick it up from the chewing end.

In the event that no teeth were knocked out, go and rinse your mouth out to get as much of the blood out as you can.

Keeping the Bleeding Under Control and the Swelling to a Minimum

Once your mouth has been rinsed out, next you need to put a clean bit of cloth or gauze on the wound. You want to put pressure on the wound, but not too much pressure.

You should push down enough to help slow the bleeding, but smashing down the wound is not going to allow the necessary blood flow to keep the tissue healthy, so you need to find a middle ground.

Once the bleeding has stopped, you need to then put a bit of ice on the area that was injured. This will keep the swelling down, and allow healing to begin.

If your injury was minor, you should just keep an eye on the area to ensure that it is healing without swelling, puss, or heat, which are all signs of infection. If your injury was a bit larger, you should go in and see your dentist to have them take a peek.

They can look around the inside of your mouth to make sure that you did not knock into any teeth or injure any of the areas inside your mouth more than you realized. They can also tell you how to relieve the pain and how long the pain and swelling should last.
