Children's Dentistry
Tigard, OR

It is very important for your child to establish a good relationship with a dentist early in life. At our office, we are very gentle and caring with children to help them foster that relationship. Even if you have your own predisposed fears of dental work, it is paramount that it is not passed on to your children. The earlier you bring them in for regular appointments, the more natural dental work will become to them, and just like adults, preventative dental work is the least invasive and most productive for children.

The First Appointment

A child's first appointment should take place shortly after the eruption of his first tooth or as close to his first birthday as possible. This gives us an opportunity to create a baseline for your child by inspecting his mouth early on in his childhood. The first exam is very simple and is a way for us to see if there are any potential issues that will need to be addressed in the future, as well as a time to educate you on proper oral health care for your child.

As more teeth erupt, we will continue to monitor your child's bite, watch for signs of tooth decay, and discuss any lifestyle habits that your child may have that could be ruining his oral health. These habits could include a poor diet, thumb sucking, pacifier use, or bottle/sippy cup use. We will discuss the effects that these habits are having on your child's oral health as well as effective ways to eliminate them from your child's life.

Baby Teeth

Your child's baby teeth are an important part of his life, despite the misgivings of many parents. Even though these teeth will be replaced at some point in the future with a more permanent set, they create the groundwork for your child's oral health. Baby teeth keep a place for the permanent teeth to erupt, which means they prevent overcrowding in your child's mouth. If baby teeth are left to decay and eventually prematurely fall out, that spot will be lost due to the shifting of the remaining teeth taking over that space. This could cause future oral health issues for your child that could lead to invasive procedures.

At our dental office, we are very dedicated to educating every single one of our patients, including children. At every child's appointment, we will discuss the importance of brushing, flossing, and eating a healthy diet. We may demonstrate proper brushing techniques as well as talk to you about any issues or changes that we see in your child's mouth. We feel that as long as everyone stays educated along the way, optimal oral health can occur for children at any age.

If you have not made your child's first dental appointment yet, now is a great time to get started. It is never too late to get your child on the path to optimal oral health.
