How Dental Implants Can Make a Significant Difference
Tigard, OR

Dentist examining an elder woman after getting dental implant at Lisa Gitelson, DMD, Tigard, OR Dentist. You can suffer tooth loss for a variety of different reasons. You may experience facial trauma, tooth decay or gum disease. In some cases, teeth may need to be extracted due to extreme damage. No matter what the cause of tooth loss, the effects are devastating. Your smile is significantly altered, which affects your confidence. Basic functions become more of a challenge. Your jaw even begins to weaken and change shape. There are several options available for tooth replacement. At Lisa Gitelson, DMD, however, we offer dental implants, which can make a significant difference over traditional replacement treatments.

Traditional Treatments for Tooth Loss

Traditionally, tooth loss has been treated with either bridges or dentures. Bridges, which are used to replace one to three missing teeth, consist of fake teeth set between two dental crowns. The crowns anchor the bridge onto the adjacent healthy teeth. Dentures, available as partial or full, are removable replacements. They consist of false teeth set into a colored gum base that rests directly on your gums. Partial dentures also have metal clasps, which hook on to your healthy teeth to provide additional support. Not sure if Dental Implants or Dentures are the right choice? At Lisa Gitelson, DMD we want to make sure you have all the information to make the best decision for you.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a modern alternative to bridges and dentures. This treatment uses titanium posts to support ceramic crowns. The posts are surgically implanted into the jawbone. As you heal from surgery, the bone fuses to the posts, a process called osseointegration. The posts integrate into the jaw and become strong, stable roots that hold your new teeth securely in place.

How Dental Implants Make a Difference

Just like traditional tooth replacement treatments, dental implants restore your abilities to eat and speak, as well as your smile. However, dental implants made a significant difference in your quality of life over traditional treatment.

•  Implants are secure. Dentures can slip out of place, especially when they do not fit properly. This is a common issue while you are eating or speaking. Not only can slipping dentures cause an embarrassing situation, but it can also interfere with these essential functions. Dental implants hold your teeth securely in place, which prevents them from slipping. You can eat and speak with confidence.
•  Implants are comfortable. Dentures rely on your gums for support. This tissue was not designed to support the pressure that dentures place on them. Moreover, dentures can rub your gums, which can cause painful sores. With dental implants, the posts provide the support for your teeth, mimicking your natural tooth roots. No unnecessary pressure is placed on your gums.
•  Implants are easy to care for. Denture care can be tedious. They need to be removed every night and thoroughly cleaned before cleaning your natural teeth and gums. Dentures also need to soak overnight. Dental implants, on the other hand, can be brushed and flossed just like your natural teeth.
•  Implants preserve the integrity of your jawbone. When you chew, the roots of your teeth stimulate your jawbone. This stimulation sends a message to your body, and your body responds by sending essential nutrients to keep the bone and surrounding structures healthy. When you lose teeth, the stimulation lessens. As a result, fewer nutrients are sent. Your jaw begins to resorb and weaken. Even though dentures and bridges replace your missing teeth, they do not stimulate your jawbone. The bone continues to weaken and change shape. Dental implants, on the other hand, mimic the roots of your teeth and stimulate the jawbone. This helps to maintain the health and shape of your jaw, preventing bone loss. Dental implants are the only replacement option that offers this benefit.

If you are missing teeth, it is essential that you have them replaced as soon as possible. Dental implants can make a significant difference in the condition of your mouth, your appearance and your quality of life.
