Implants Or Dentures, Which Is Right For Me?

Tooth loss has many causes. While it is a common result of advanced gum disease, it can also be caused by tooth decay, facial trauma or bruxism. No matter what the cause, the effects are all the same, and the affect every aspect of your life. Eating and speaking, two things you probably once spent very little time thinking about, become incredibly difficult. Your smile is affected, as is your confidence. Your jaw also begins to change shape, throwing off your natural bite. Replacing missing teeth is essential for restoring the functions of your mouth, your smile, and your quality of life. Teeth can be replaced with either implants or dentures. At Lisa Gitelson, DMD, we can help you to find the best option to suit your needs.

What are Dentures?

Dentures are a traditional, removable, treatment for missing teeth, and have been used for several hundred years. The dentures we use today, however, are vastly different from their original predecessors, and designed to be more natural in appearance and more comfortable. Dentures consist of an acrylic base that supports acrylic resin teeth. The base is made to sit directly on your gums, which provide the support for your teeth. Dentures can be made to replace an entire arch of missing teeth, called full dentures, or sections of missing teeth, called partial dentures. Partial dentures have metal clasps that anchor on to your natural teeth, providing additional support.

What are the Pros and Cons of Dentures?

Benefits of dentures include:

•  They restore your ability to bite and chew.
•  They restore your ability to speak properly.
•  They restore your smile.
•  They are more natural, and more comfortable than their original counterparts.

There are also some disadvantages to dentures as well.

•  They can slip out of place, causing embarrassing situations.
•  If they do not fit properly, they can rub your gums, causing painful sores.
•  They do not stop bone loss that follows tooth loss, and therefore need to be replaced every few years to accommodate your changing jaw.
•  They require a significant amount of additional care every night.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a more recent alternative to traditional dentures. This revolutionary treatment for replacing missing teeth involves a surgical procedure, during which titanium rods are implanted directly into the jawbone. The bone fuses to the posts, integrating them into the jaw. Successful integration turns the posts into stable roots that are then used to support ceramic crowns. Unlike dentures, implants are not removable, and are considered a permanent solution for tooth replacement.

Dental Implant Pros and Cons

Dental implants offer numerous benefits, including:

•  They look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth.
•  When the implants are properly integrated into the jaw, they hold your teeth securely in place.
•  They are more comfortable than dentures.
•  They will not slip out of place.
•  They can be cared for just like your natural teeth.
•  The posts stimulate your jawbone just like the roots of your natural teeth, which helps to prevent bone loss in the jaw and maintain the strength of the jaw.

Implants also have a few drawbacks as well.

•  They require surgery for placement.
•  With surgery, there is a recovery period involved.
•  They cost more than dentures.
•  If you do not have sufficient bone mass in your jaw prior to surgery, you may require a bone graft.

If you are missing teeth, it is imperative to replace them as soon as possible. Call Lisa Gitelson, DMD today to schedule your consultation and find out what option is best for you at (503) 985-8945.
