Why We Do Oral Cancer Screenings Every Six Month

Posted on 11/20/2018 by Boeckel
Why We Do Oral Cancer Screenings Every Six MonthCancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. As dental professionals, one of our main responsibilities is making sure that our patients can prevent serious diseases such as cancer.

Our team of dentists are trained to conduct oral examinations and look for possible signs of cancer. As with most forms of cancer, if caught early, oral cancer can be successfully treated.

The problem with oral cancer is that in its initial stages it can produce no symptoms or pain that indicate there is something wrong, but in many cases an oral examination can detect the presence of some signs of oral cancer. If you notice a lump or sore that doesn't go away after two-weeks, we urge you to call us right away.

Oral Cancer Screening

A complete evaluation of the oral cavity, including the soft tissue is a routine practice in our office because oral cancer prevention is the key to a successful outcome. This helps us spot anything unusual going on in your mouth. If you are a smoker, we pay even closer attention to possible oral cancer signs, as you are at a higher risk for the disease.

A thorough oral cancer screening includes an examination of the inside of the mouth, including tongue, cheeks, lips, roof and floor of the mouth, and gums for signs of sores, white, red or black patches, and irregular tissue. Additionally, we check your head and neck for any lumps or bumps.

In addition, if you have a persistent sore throat that is not going away, difficulty chewing or swallowing, changes in your bite or numbness in your mouth, you need to call us immediately. The sooner we diagnose oral cancer the greater the chances of a full recovery.

According to scientific research, men are twice as likely as women to develop oral cancer. If you have any concerns or questions about oral cancer don't hesitate to ask us.
