Are There Any Types of Juice that Are Beneficial to Your Oral Health?

Are There Any Types of Juice that Are Beneficial to Your Oral Health?Juice often gets a bad reputation when it comes to oral health, mostly due to the high sugar and acid content of most options.

However, if you select the right beverage, you can actually get some oral health benefits while enjoying a refreshing, fruity drink.

Fresh Juice Trumps Commercial Beverages

When it comes to juice, drinking a fresh product makes a big difference. Store-bought options are more likely to damage the teeth and gums, as they contain more acid than freshly-squeezed or blended products.

Plus, you'll enjoy more of the nutrients of the original fruit when you drink the beverage fresh.

Choose Juice with a High Vegetable Content

For juice that is good for your teeth, make sure the ratio of vegetable to fruit juice is high. Vegetable juices are less acidic and typically do not cause any dental issues. Certain vegetables also contain important nutrients for your oral health, such as leafy greens. Kale and spinach are high in calcium, which is a necessary nutrient for strong teeth and bones.

Protect Your Teeth When You Drink Juice

Regardless of what type of juice you drink, it is important to protect your teeth. Too much of a good thing could ultimately lead to some dental issues, but these steps can help:

•  Don't brush your teeth right after drinking. You'll actually aggravate the already weakened enamel even more. Instead, rinse out your mouth with water and wait 30-60 minute before you brush.
•  Use a straw. Straws can help to divert the liquid away from your teeth, minimizing the risk of harm.
•  Avoid juices that are high in sugar. Read the ingredients of any juice brand carefully to avoid excess sugar intake.

While proper nutrition is essential for good oral health, regular dental visits are also crucial. Give us a call today to set up your next appointment.
