What Is Oil Pulling?

This is a new practice that has not been studied sufficiently, but even some dentists believe that it does improve oral health. Oil pulling consists of swishing a vegetable oil of your choice in your mouth for 20-minutes.

Why Do Oil Pulling?

Those who swear by it say that oil pulling improves their oral health by getting rid of bad breath and giving their mouth a fresher feeling. At this point, it is up to the individual patient and it depends on what oral conditions exist. For people with gum disease or periodontal disease, oil pulling can be helpful for a healthier mouth.

What Kind of Oil Should I Use?

Any vegetable oil works for oil pulling, however, since you are supposed to swish it around for 20-minutes, you should try to find a flavor that you like. Coconut oil seems to be the most popular with people who practice oil pulling, but olive oil or another of the healthy oils. Avocado oil can also be used.

Does Oil Pulling Replace Regular Checkups?

Absolutely not. Oil pulling is an additional habit for those who want to have a healthier mouth, so if you have good habits and no major oral conditions or problems, oil pulling won't make much of a difference. You can try it for bad breath if that is a concern.

Your hygienist may be surprised at your next checkup and may ask you what you are doing to have such a good exam. Your breath may feel fresher than usual, but you don't think that oil pulling can replace your regular checkups, brushing or flossing.
