Yes, we're going to broach the dreaded dental procedure topic. When you have a dental procedure, your gums are irritated, you may have a hole in them if a tooth was pulled. For a variety of reasons, you are generally instructed to go on a liquid or soft food diet. Many of these instructions you get depends on what dental procedure was performed. The thing is – what can you eat? You sure can't live on broth for long.

What's Considered Liquid?

When you have to go on a liquid diet you picture sitting at home drinking broth made with bouillon cubes. Well, no one wants to do that. But what if the liquid diet doesn't have to be that bad. And it doesn't.

A liquid diet can be made of a lot of things. First off there are the fun drinks like milkshakes, smoothies, chocolate milk, slurpees and protein drinks. But you can also add tapioca pudding to the liquid list. Then there are soups. You can eat soup that doesn't have anything that crunches or needs chewing. If you like creamed soups, you are in luck. Creamed soups are on the approved list.

What About Soft Foods?

Once you graduate to soft foods you have many more options. You probably eat acceptable soft food in your regular diet and don't even realize it. Now that you can eat soft food you've graduated to cottage cheese, yogurt, mashed potatoes, refried beans. You can eat ice cream and pudding for dessert.

For your main course, you're still pretty restricted. Although by the third day after your procedure, you can add macaroni and cheese, soft-boiled, scrambled or poached eggs. You can have cooked noodles and you can even eat soft sandwiches. The bottom line is no food that has to be chewed a lot and nothing crunchy.
