Fight Tooth Sensitivity by Changing Your Diet

Posted on 5/30/2016 by Boeckel
A woman suffering from a sensitive tooth!Sensitive teeth can be extremely uncomfortable. Whether you bite into an ice cream cone or take a sip of hot coffee, you can experience shooting pain that travels through your teeth.

While there are toothpastes out there that can help to ease your discomfort and reduce sensitivity, there are also other things that you can do to fight this problem, some of which involve your diet.

Eat Enough Dairy
Dairy products are high in calcium, which is known to protect and strengthen the teeth.

Foods like yogurt and cheese also contain caseins, which can help to create a protective layer of protein over the dentin of your teeth. This layer will act as an acid buffer which can actually make your teeth feel less sensitive.

Choose Foods that are Rich in Oxalate

Foods that are high in oxalic acid can be beneficial to your oral health. These include bananas, rhubarb, and spinach. After you eat them, your teeth might feel fuzzy, and this feeling is the result of oxalate crystals as they precipitate on your teeth. This works similarly to how topical sensitivity treatments will help your teeth.

Cut Back on Erosive Drinks and Foods

Foods and drinks that are high in acid can make sensitivity worse, as they will strip the dentin of protective protein. This results in exposing the pores, so cutting back on drinking soda and juice can be a big help. Vinegars and fruits should also be avoided in order to achieve the best results.

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, it is important that you contact our office. There is likely an underlying cause that is resulting in the problem, and it could be something serious like gum disease.

Discussing your concerns with your dentist can get the problem diagnosed and treated so that you don't experience future discomfort.
