Age Gracefully by Whitening Your Teeth

Posted on 3/10/2016 by Boeckel
An elderly man happy with his newly whitened smile! We always hear that we get better with age, but does the same go for your teeth? With years of drinking coffee and wine and eating foods that aren't the best for our teeth, it is no surprise that our teeth will start to look discolored as we get older. Fortunately, we don't have to live with stained teeth as we get older, as your dentist is here to help.

Why Are You Susceptible to Tooth Stains as You Age?

There are several reasons that your teeth will become more susceptible to staining with age. Obviously, years of eating and drinking dark-colored foods and beverages can take a toll on the health of your mouth.

This can cause discoloration over time. With time, the tooth enamel will also become thin, revealing some of the underlying yellow dentin.

Additionally, injuries or damage to your teeth that may have occurred throughout your life could cause discoloration that only becomes noticeable as you get older.

What Can Seniors Do About Stained Teeth?

Regardless of your age, if you are concerned about stains on your teeth you should be sure to contact your dentist. There are a variety of options out there that can get you a whiter, brighter smile. Some can be purchased at your local pharmacy, such as over-the-counter whitening strips, gels, and toothpastes.

While these options are easily accessible, a better choice may be to invest in chair side of take home whitening systems that are offered at your dentist's office. These whitening mechanisms tend to be more reliable, more effective, and can take a fraction of the time to get you the results that you want.

More seniors than ever are keeping their natural teeth, and if you are one of them, you likely want your smile to stay white.

Contact our office today about what options might work best for your teeth.
