4 Things in Your Toothpaste

Posted on 2/20/2016 by Boeckel
A toothbrush with a pea sized piece of toothpaste on it .Twice a day you brush your teeth religiously, but do you really know what you are squeezing onto your toothbrush? What exactly is in your toothpaste, and how does it keep your teeth clean? These are four of the primary ingredients that are working to keep your teeth clean and healthy.

Fluoride

Fluoride is arguably the most important ingredient when it comes to cavity prevention. This mineral strengthens your tooth enamel, making your teeth less susceptible to cavities and wear from acidic beverages and foods. Only products that contain fluoride will receive the ADA's Seal of Acceptance.

Lauryl Sulfate

Lauryl sulfate is the most common detergent that is placed in toothpaste. This ingredient provides a vital role, as it will help your toothpaste to foam when you brush. Without the foaming action, it would be difficult to get a thorough cleaning.

Humectants

A humectant is an ingredient that prevents water loss in your toothpaste. Sorbitol is one of the most common, and it also acts as a flavoring agent. Sorbitol will trap water into the toothpaste so that when you squeeze on the tube, a smooth substance squirts out. Other humectants include glycerol and glycol.

Abrasives

Abrasives are technically an inactive ingredient within your toothpaste, as they won't reduce your risk of developing gum disease or cavities. However, they play an important role. Your toothpaste wouldn't be very effective without abrasives that actually remove the stains and food debris from your teeth.

Originally made from egg shells and other rough items, abrasives now consist of hydrated aluminum oxides and calcium carbonate, and they scrub the teeth without damaging or scratching the enamel.

In addition to these ingredients, toothpaste also includes flavors, making your brushing experience more enjoyable. If you are looking for a new toothpaste and are concerned about the ingredients, be sure to contact our office for guidance.
